With the federal government’s deficit growing and the need to control spending is more important than ever, a new Government Accountability Office report found that companies fraudulently collected at least $100 million in federal contracts from a $4 billion government program designated for disabled military veterans who run small businesses. The report charges that the Small Business Administration failed to check if companies were eligible for the no-bid contracts for veterans with service-related injuries.

I’ve been suspicious of Senator Grassley’s alliances during this health care reform debate, worrying that he has been representing the insurance companies and not his constituents. Now there’s an amendment in the health care reform bill that is definitively anti-women, in which reproductive rights are jeopardized. Where will Grassley align himself on this one? I will be watching.

OMAHA – The annual Holiday Lights Festival in Omaha kicks off Thursday, Nov. 26, with the Mutual of Omaha Thanksgiving Lighting Ceremony at Gene Leahy Mall, 14th and Farnam streets, Omaha. Each year, the festival features a brilliant lighting display that spans more than 40 blocks of downtown Omaha, as well as a full season of family-friendly activities through Jan. 10, 2010.
