The bear that killed a caretaker in a Cleveland suburb on Aug. 19 was the just the latest example of animal violence in a state that has some of the nation’s weakest restrictions on exotic pets and among the highest number of injuries and deaths caused by them.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that the citizenry of Council Bluffs and surrounding communities seem to have very strong opinions about the newly installed Albert Paley “Odyssey” work on Interstate 80. Mr. Paley is reputed to be a foremost artist who is most well known for his “Gateway” works; hence, he was commissioned and his work was placed on the 24th Street Bridge over I-80, on the Western gateway to the state of Iowa. Never having been very successful in art as a class in grade school or beyond, I may not be qualified to offer an expert opinion of this work. I do think I am qualified to say that it is a modernistic abstract work, and as such, is also designed to spark conversation and controversy. Given the facts that the work has been paid for (we own it), that it is very abstract and non-mainstream, and that it appears to be highly controversial, I wonder if such a work should be placed in such a mainstream, high traffic area where it is viewed by all: those that want to see it and those that do not want to see it? It seems like someone’s will is being forced upon the will of others.
